9th and 9th Skate Park Review
The 9th and 9th skate park is a fairly old skate park in Salt Lake City. It was built some time in the early 2000s, but government sources for the contracts have decayed on the internet, so an exact date is difficult to pin down. It’s fun for experienced skaters or skaters looking for a challenge, but if you’re looking for a park you can skate as a new skater or someone looking only for a chill time, look elsewhere.
Location: 4035 California Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84104, US
Pros of the 9th and 9th Skate Park
- It’s convenient to get to by public transportation, with several bus lines going past or near the bus stop in walking distance of the park
- It has all of the features a normal skate park should have – ramps, ledges, rails, a bowl, and somewhat well-maintained concrete
- It’s fairly low-traffic, which means if you like the park you won’t be crowded
- Learning to skate the park is a great way to improve your skateboarding skills
Cons of the 9th and 9th Skate Park
Where should we begin?
This park is built in such a way that new or inexperienced skaters will have a difficult time and risk of injury. The transitions are weird, and the park wasn’t built by a company known for building skate parks. Usually, this means that the park was built by the local government at the request of busybodies trying to keep things they don’t like (skaters) out of sight and mind- for the lowest possible cost by the lowest bidder, of course.
However, the weirdness doesn’t stop at the transitions: The ramps are very uncomfortable to drop down being very high, some of the gutters are too narrow, the angles of the ramps sometimes mean you have to skate faster than you would intuitively feel to make it up. Learning to skate the park is fun, as always with bizarrely built parks, but it won’t be a relaxing experience until you know all of its quirks.
9th and 9th Overall Rating
The park is acceptable. It isn’t for new skaters, and until you master it you’ll be reminded of all of the bored retirees begging the city council for a cage for people they don’t like. If you’re looking to push your skills for the next level, by all means, visit it to improve- but unless you have no other option, we recommend going someplace else. We give this park a 4/10 – It’s skateable, but it won’t be for everyone.
